We found the best ice cream at Yo! Friday Harbor. On First Street, not far from the ferry terminal is a little sweet shop, a sweet little shop, which may have a line out the door. They sell Lopez Island Creamery ice cream and have a full selection of flavors. We had to compare the beautifully hued Bow Hill Blueberry (a fun Skagit Valley destination!) and their Blackberry. Both are outstanding - creamy and fruity. If you like lavender, they were also serving a Lavender Blackberry flavor when we were there (June 2021). Very San Juan Island!
If you’re up for a walk (about 3/4 mile) and have a hankering for some bakery items, you can head up Spring Street from the ferry and take a left at Mullis Street. This takes you out of the more touristy part of Friday Harbor. Just before the airport you’ll find Bakery San Juan set back from the road. In addition to breads, scones, muffins, croissants and cookies, they have an interesting variety of pizzas by the slice, as well as a curated selection of wines and regional beers. As it was late morning when we stopped by, we decided to try their cinnamon rolls and were very happy with our choice. Just the right amount of cinnamon, not too much frosting, not too gooey but still moist. Best ones we’ve had in a while!
On our way back to the marina we took a different route down Market Street. Here we found a nice new grocery store with no signage. We think the locals want to keep this place for themselves and let the tourists use Kings on Spring Street! This unmarked place is Friday Harbor Market Place and would be an excellent provision spot except for the slightly longer walk.
